Ornua Ingredients is responsible for the procurement of Irish and non-Irish dairy products and for the sale of dairy ingredients to food manufacturing and foodservice customers across the world. Ornua Ingredients is also responsible for managing volatility through de-risking and trading strategies. The business is supported by production facilities in Saudi Arabia, Spain, the UK, the US and by in-market teams in Africa and the Middle East.

Master data management is the core process used to manage, centralize, organize, categorize, localize, synchronize master data according to an organisations strategy.     Master Data is  the foundation on which transactions are executed and is the core data that is essential to operations in a specific business or business unit. This can be data about customers, material, vendors, suppliers and much more. 


Job Summary:


The Technical Inspector (TI) is initially a 12 month fixed term contract and the core role is to ensure that all products supplied to Ornua Cooperative Ltd comply with agreed quality and safety parameters, are legally compliant and meet customer requirements. The TI will be responsible for managing stock exceptions with relevant commercial teams and for tracking and monitoring Supplier performance relating to stock.


The TI will maintain close working relationships with Ornua Co-op’s Trading, Ingredient and Consumer Foods divisions, with Key Suppliers and as required, with warehouses, transport companies, manufacturers, subsidiaries and 3rd party suppliers and packers to the business. The role involves working as part of a Customer Centric Group and will be responsible for key customer technical relationships working with commercial teams to meet customer specific requirements and to ensure that all stock records are accurate and relevant to market specifications.


The role involves working with the Technical Team to monitor, sample and inspect product, to ensure all product is supplied with relevant quality data and complies with agreed specifications. To support the Supplier Assurance Manager / Commercial teams in completing and facilitating audits as required and to work closely with the Technical Team to resolve key issues.


The TI will participate in cross departmental projects and meetings as the business requires and will play a part in maintaining the BRC Agents & Brokers accreditation in conjunction with the Technical Team and to provide cover for the Technical Manager as required.


The TI will be familiar with all aspects of Ornua systems, such as stock management and results entry within the ERP system (Movex), Specification management on the Ornua Quality Management Systems (Sharepoint/QUBE). The TI will be expected to drive root cause investigation for all Non-conformances and issues. The TI will work with all Suppliers, to implement corrective and preventative action and will participate in and drive continuous improvement projects with Suppliers and internal cross departmental teams. This will involve identifying trends and developing action plans to address issues with relevant stakeholders. The TI will be expected to undertake thorough risk assessments of situation / product issues as these occur and to minimize and manage the risk to Ornua at all times.


The role will involve being present on site at supplier/ warehouse locations as required, to carry out quality checks to ensure that both bulk and finished packed product always meets Ornua specifications and expected standards of packing / production.


The role requires the TI to keep abreast of any changes to legislation, production and process developments as relevant and to ensure all Ornua’s products and service providers meet relevant legislative requirements.


Key Areas of Responsibility:

  1. To work closely with Suppliers/ Packers to ensure all product procured by Ornua Co-op is at all times produced in a safe manner and meets the standards laid down by legislation, due diligence, market and customer requirements.


  1. To apply quality and sensory evaluation skills, to inspect and categorise correctly, products purchased by Ornua.


  1. To monitor closely Ornua stocks to ensure maximum quantity of stock is saleable at all times.  To identify product for specific customers in line with their requirements and reclassify or upgrade the quality of product to increase value where possible. To work with Commercial & suppliers to manage exceptions in Stock.


  1. To drive resolution of customer issues and complaints as these arise in a timely manner, including undertaking visits to manufacturers/warehouses/packers/customers as necessary and ensuring timely resolution of issues. 


  1. To drive continuous improvement with Suppliers to Ornua through:
    • Driving of root cause and resolution of all issues within specified timelines
    • Quality management of stock
    • Driving Corrective Action completion and verification
    • Holding accountable those that do not meet minimum standards
    • Preparing detailed Technical reports such as non-conformance reviews
    • Participating in KPI monitoring of Supplier performance
    • Identifying of trends and developments of action plans with Suppliers


  1. To respond to customer technical questionnaires and other documentation requests as required in conjunction with the Technical Support Team.


  1. To ensure that Ornua procedures relating to product quality & safety, including product inspection, storage and handling of product are followed at all times and to participate in regular reviews and revisions of Ornua specifications in conjunction with support team & Specification Technologist. 


  1. To provide technical information, to assist in the creation of robust specifications to be agreed with Suppliers / Customers.


  1. To participate in the management of the Ornua system to ensure full compliance with BRC Agents & Brokers Accreditation.


  1. To facilitate customer inspection sessions and technical visits to Supplier sites and to respond to customers’ requests for information and samples in a professional and timely manner.


  1. To participate in cross departmental projects and new product launches as required and to work with the Supplier Assurance Manager to audit as required New Packers / Production / Warehouse sites.


  1. To work closely with all internal teams to maintain safe and quality production/ packing to ensures Ornua Co-op product meets all legislative, due diligence, market and customer requirement and to ensure that appropriate technical service levels are provided to the Dairy Trading & Ingredients and Consumer Foods Divisions.


  1. To support the Technical team colleagues and Technical Manager as required and support customers and other cross functional teams as part of a Customer Centric Cluster.


  1. To have a good working knowledge of legislation relevant to the manufacture, storage and handling of Ornua product categories, including monitoring of any changes to this legislation during audits, to ensure that all Ornua products meet legislative and legal requirements.


  1. To at all times represent the Ornua to the highest level in all interactions with our members, suppliers, service providers and customers.
  2. To develop and maintain good relationships with Ornua suppliers, warehouses, 3rd party packers and service providers.
  3. To perform any other appropriate duties from time to time.


Key Requirements & Attributes:

  • 3-5 years’ plus experience within Technical/Quality Assurance, ideally dairy however food or beverage will be considered.
  • A third level qualification in a technical / food science discipline.
  • Capability to learn sensory evaluation of dairy products and previous sensory.
  • Strength of knowledge in the following areas would be a distinct advantage:
    • Food Safety HACCP
    • Microbiology, preferably Dairy based
    • Auditing
  • Strong business results focus.
